What Is a Ranch-Style Home?

A ranch-style house is a popular home design with living areas and the bedrooms all on the main floor, eliminating the need to climb stairs multiple times daily. These easy-living one-story house plans offer improved traffic flow from room to room and a variety of floor plan layouts.

At Design Basics, our collection of one-story floor plans can be customized to include everything you want. Ranging from less than 500 square feet to luxury designs of more than 7,000 square feet, we’re here to help you build your dream ranch home!

Why Are People Choosing One-Story House Plans?

Many people opt for a single-story home because of its open, spacious floor plan. Potentially eliminating a staircase can free up square footage, so you have more space for larger rooms that naturally flow from one area to the next.

Ranch-style homes are also easier to maintain. Cleaning is a breeze as there’s no need to carry a vacuum and other supplies up and downstairs. Exterior upkeep doesn’t require such a tall ladder. Plus, ranch homes today are better than ever—with interesting roof lines, higher ceilings, bigger closets, and lots of great home styles available.

Characteristics of a Ranch Home Plan

While our selection of one-story home plans can be customized to fit your exact needs, here are a few common features typically seen in our ranch-style houses.

Open Floor Plans

With ranch homes being only one story, many of these designs feature an open floor plan, easing communication and helping everyone to feel connected. Open layouts also make the space feel larger, and there’s better traffic flow from one room to the next.

Design Amenities and Options

Today’s ranch/one-story floor plans include thoughtful design amenities.  They often showcase higher ceilings in select areas.  These taller ceilings allow for more or larger windows that bring in additional natural light.  Our one-story home designs feature garage entry into a ‘rear-entry foyer’ – NOT a ‘mud’ room.  Our rear-entry foyers feature drop zones, storage options, pet care areas and more.  If building on a slab or crawl foundation, we often repurpose the space for a ‘pocket office’ or other storage.

Storage is Prioritized

Having large closets in your home is great for added storage. From spacious coat closets to walk-in closets in the bedrooms, a ranch home can give you the storage space you need.

What is a Ranch Style House?

The main characteristic of a ranch-style home is that the primary living areas and bedrooms are on the main level. Some of these one-story homes will have stairs up to a possible bonus room or attic space, while others will have stairs down to a basement which may offer opportunities for additional finished living space.

What's the Average Size of Ranch-Style Home?

Our most popular ranch-style homes range from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. With that being said, Design Basics’ expansive single-story home portfolio and customization options mean your home can be built to the exact size you need!

At Design Basics, our team will work alongside you to help you choose the perfect home plan that fits your budget.
